What it Takes to be Compliant: A Commercial Cold Tub Case Study

Jan 14, 2026 | Commercial Use, Compliance

At Ice Works Bath Co, we’re occasionally called in when a commercial cold tub system hasn’t been set up properly or there are unresolved issues. Our team of experts is able to step in and help navigate the challenges. This project is a clear example of why proper design, technical expertise, and regulatory understanding matter.

Background

The client reached out to us after opening a new contrast therapy facility. The original contractor had supplied and installed the cold tub system but failed to properly commission the tub before leaving the site. The chillers were not installed at the time of handover, and no functional testing was completed. This install was incomplete.

Believing the system was operational, the client opened their doors. Shortly after initial use, the circulation pump failed and burned out. This was when we were contacted to assess the system and do what the other company failed to complete

Findings During Our Initial Site Visit

Our assessment identified several critical issues:

Tub vessel non-compliance: The tub was not designed in accordance with Ontario Pool Regulation requirements. Most notably, it lacked a skimmer – a critical component for surface water removal and proper circulation.

Improper equipment selection: Several components were incorrectly sized or specified for the tub’s water volume. Some equipment was oversized, while others were unsuitable for the application (and never should have been recommended).

– Poor installation and piping practices: The system did not follow standard industry practices. Piping and layout errors resulted in inadequate circulation and inefficient operation.

Regulatory non-compliance: Required safety and compliance elements, including an emergency telephone, audible and visual emergency stop button, and regulatory signage, were entirely missing. The client was unaware that these were necessary to obtain health inspector approval.

Scope of Work

After taking over the project, our Team:

– Removed and disassembled all previously installed equipment and piping

– Supplied and installed new equipment properly sized for the application

– Redesigned and rebuilt the system to meet applicable codes, standards, and Ontario Pool Regulation requirements

– Added a properly designed skimmer to the tub vessel

– Coordinated the layout to ensure proper circulation, filtration, and long-term maintainability

Client Support and Outcome

Beyond the physical rebuild, we worked closely with the client to explain regulatory requirements, testing and balancing procedures, and documentation needed for inspection and ongoing operation.

The tub is now operating smoothly, safely, and as designed. We continue to provide ongoing support and remain available as a technical resource.

This project reinforces a simple truth: in commercial cold immersion environments, doing it right isn’t optional. Experience, regulatory knowledge, and proper commissioning make all the difference – and that’s where we show up.
